This summer, the Texas Furniture Makers Show (TFMS) is offering a series of workshops taught by our master furniture makers and key sponsors. These classes will focus on passing down their furniture design knowledge and skills to interested woodworkers. The TFMS Workshops will be hosted at Woodcraft stores in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Fort Worth

Marquetry and veneering have long added artistry and refinement to fine furniture. In this four-hour introductory workshop, Wayne Delyea will guide students through the core principles and techniques behind these decorative methods. Topics include veneer selection and handling, marquetry vs. veneering, design basics, cutting and assembly methods, substrate prep, adhesives, and pressing techniques for stable panels. Instructor demonstrations and hands-on participation will build practical skills, and each student will receive a reference booklet for continued practice after class.
Wayne Delyea is a master furniture maker based near Granbury, Texas, specializing in one-of-a-kind cabinets, desks, tables, and chairs often featuring intricate marquetry and veneer work. He has earned numerous awards over two decades at the Texas Furniture Makers Show as well as Best in Show at the Western Design Conference. Wayne also serves on the board of the American Marquetry Society.
Greene & Greene Furniture Design Elements

The Greene and Greene style is one of the most refined expressions of the American Arts and Crafts movement. In this four hour workshop, Mark Seay will explore the history and lasting influence of Charles and Henry Greene while introducing the defining elements of the style—softened edges, cloud lifts, exposed joinery, and ebony accents. Demonstrations will include finger-jointed drawers, ebony plugs and splines, pillowed ebony details, square mortises, and breadboard spline techniques. Students will gain both practical skills and design inspiration for their own work.
Mark Seay is an experienced woodworking instructor at Woodcraft Dallas, Texas and a celebrated furniture maker whose work has repeatedly earned recognition at the Texas Furniture Makers Show, including awards for craftsmanship and design. He has also served as a judge at the event. His hands-on teaching style and passion for fine woodworking help students of all levels build confidence and develop their skills at the workbench and beyond.

Choosing the right finish can elevate a woodworking project from good to exceptional. In this two-hour workshop, Rubio Monocoat representative Dave Hanson will guide students through the fundamentals of selecting and applying modern hardwax oil finishes for beautiful, durable results. Topics include product selection, surface preparation, application techniques, avoiding common mistakes, achieving the desired color and sheen, and maintenance and repair. Through demonstrations and discussion, students will gain practical finishing knowledge for their own projects.

Understanding the journey from forest to finished lumber is essential knowledge for any woodworker. In this one-hour workshop, Brandon Berdoll will guide students through the sawyer's process of transforming a tree into kiln-dried, surfaced lumber ready for furniture and woodworking. This insider look will cover how he selects quality logs, saws for maximum yield & figure, kiln dries & monitors moisture content, flattens & planes lumber to uniform thickness, and proper storage to prevent warping. Students will gain insight into how a sawmill's decisions affect the beauty and usability of wood.
Brandon Berdoll is a seasoned woodworking professional and owner of Berdoll Sawmill in Cedar Creek, Texas. He is known for sustainably sourcing, milling, drying, and surfacing high-quality Texas hardwood slabs and lumber. Brandon also teaches educational seminars for the AIA and the Texas A&M Forestry Program, sharing his expertise in timber selection, processing, and responsible wood utilization. Brandon has won awards and served as a judge at the Texas Furniture Makers Show; Berdoll Sawmill is a longtime sponsor of the event.
Power Sanding Techniques

Achieving a flawless finish begins with mastering the art of sanding. In this three- hour workshop, Erich Elfeldt will guide students through practical sanding techniques using a variety of power sanders to achieve smooth, consistent surfaces. Topics include grit progression, dust collection, raking light, raising grain, sculpting live edges, leveling epoxy fills and inlays, and hand-sanding techniques such as easing edges and sanding between finish coats. Students will also learn sanding workflow, tool setup, and efficient work habits for professional-quality results.
Erich Elfeldt is a skilled furniture maker with over 40 years of woodworking experience. He co-founded TimberFire Studio near Houston, Texas where he creates “functional art” in furniture, lighting and home décor. Erich’s work blends innovative design with masterful craftsmanship and has been frequently recognized for excellence at the Texas Furniture Makers Show, including Best in Show, as well as at national exhibitions.
Chip Carving on Furniture

Chip carving is a timeless decorative technique that can elevate fine furniture with subtle detail and craftsmanship. In this 90-minute workshop, Bruce Phillips will introduce students to the principles and techniques of chip carving as applied to furniture design. Topics include selecting appropriate surfaces, framing carved areas, traditional motifs and patterns, layout strategies, tool control, and achieving clean, precise cuts with hand tools. Students will gain both design insight and practical carving skills for incorporating decorative carving into contemporary furniture projects.

Good furniture begins with thoughtful design. In this three-hour workshop, furniture designer & maker Matthew Kressin will guide students through the essential principles and creative decisions involved in furniture design. Topics include function, scale, proportion, sketching, material selection, joinery strategies, and evaluating classic and contemporary furniture forms. Through discussion, visual examples, and hands-on sketching exercises, students will learn how to develop ideas, solve design challenges, and create furniture with greater confidence, clarity, and intentionality.
Matthew Kressin is the founder of Sawtooth Designs of Austin, Texas where he creates custom furniture and home goods that celebrate natural materials and thoughtful design. He has received multiple awards at the Texas Furniture Makers Show and is recognized locally as one of Austin’s top furniture designers for his sustainable, beautifully crafted work.

Confused by the overwhelming number of modern finishing products and techniques? In this four-hour workshop, Howard Hale will introduce students to the timeless simplicity of traditional “old world” finishing methods inspired by Danish master woodworker Tage Frid. Topics include proper surface preparation, Danish oil, linseed oil, tung oil, shellac, card scrapers, fine abrasives, and Frid’s renowned “Four-F Finish.” Through lecture and demonstration, students will learn practical techniques for achieving beautiful, durable finishes with greater simplicity, confidence, and consistency.
Howard Hale is a longtime woodworking instructor and finishing specialist at Woodcraft Dallas, where he has taught classes for more than 25 years. Influenced by the teachings of renowned Danish master woodworker Tage Frid, Howard is known for helping woodworkers achieve beautiful, durable finishes through straightforward traditional techniques rooted in fine craftsmanship. Howard was a former judge at the Texas Furniture Makers Show.
